Celebrating Family and Connection: Reflections on 2024

Writer's picture: Elisa StadElisa Stad

As we welcome December and prepare to close the chapter on 2024, I find myself reflecting on the profound connections we've built throughout the year. My journey with Mama's Love Language: Sometimes Love Tastes Like Hainan Chicken Rice has not only been about sharing a story but also about exploring the beauty of multicultural traditions and the transformative power of gathering with loved ones.

The Importance of Family Rituals

In our increasingly interconnected world, family rituals emerge in a myriad of forms, reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. Whether it's gathering for a holiday meal, celebrating milestones, or simply sharing stories, these rituals anchor us to our heritage and to each other.

For many, December is a time brimming with festivities that illuminate the significance of family. From Christmas and Hanukkah to Kwanzaa and Diwali, a common thread weaves through these celebrations: the profound celebration of love and togetherness. These moments remind us that beneath our diverse backgrounds, the fundamental human desire to connect with our close and chosen families remains universal.

The Importance of Family Rituals

A Taste of Tradition: Vietnamese Eggrolls

One of my most cherished family traditions involves preparing Vietnamese eggrolls, known as "chả giò"  or “goi cuon.” More than just a dish, these rolls—typically filled with a harmonious blend of pork, shrimp, and vegetables—are a beloved staple during our family gatherings. Check out the links for easy ways to make this experience in your own home.

The act of preparing food together transcends mere sustenance; it nourishes our souls and strengthens our familial bonds. It's a poignant reminder that sharing meals is about far more than the food on the plate—it's about the connections we forge around the table. For many families, food is a language of love, a source of comfort, and a warm embrace of togetherness.

Mexican tradition: Tamales?

According to Pop Sugar, Indigenous culinary anthropologist Claudia Serrato, the tamal has a Mesoamerican archaeological existence dating back to 8,000 BC and has always been a staple of Mesoamerican tradition. Originally it was a form of honoring the Gods during specific moon phases, seasons, and spiritual celebrations. "The preparation [of tamales] was considered a cosmic culinary engagement, where the maize had to first be planted during a specific season, moon phase, grown and cultivated with water, sunlight, and songs.

It is amazing that Tamales connect with ritual and our indigenous roots. My mother-in-law is Mexican and we always celebrate Christmas Day with unwrapping tamales with chili beans.  We make them a week prior and freeze them in preparation for Christmas.  Learn how to make tamales yourself or you could buy some from your local Mexican grocer. I used to get tamales from our gardener who knew someone who knew someone who made handmade tamales from their home.

Celebrating Our Diverse Celebrations

As we honor our own family traditions, it's crucial to appreciate the kaleidoscope of ways people around the world come together during this season. Through my travels, I've been privileged to witness countless rituals—some gather around a crackling fire, others share elaborate meals, assembling egg rolls, and some participate in simple family time.  Each celebration, while distinctly different, carries a resonant message of love and connection.

This December, I warmly invite you to pause and reflect on your own family rituals. What traditions bring you joy? How do you celebrate the love of those around you? As we share our stories, we create pathways to deeper understanding, fostering a sense of community and belonging that transcends individual experiences.

Looking Ahead

As we step into a new year, let's carry forward the spirit of connection and gratitude. Let's commit to embracing diversity, celebrating our differences, and finding profound joy in our shared humanity. My hope is that Mama's Love Language continues to inspire children and families to express their unique identities while recognizing and cherishing the beauty in others.

Wishing you all a joyful and meaningful holiday season filled with love, connection, and the delicious, comforting tastes of home.

Happy Holidays,

Elisa Stad
